Cork City Air Quality Strategy

Air quality objectives and action themes

4.2 Theme 1: Health and Wellbeing This theme deals specifically with the issue of public health. The initial phase of this theme involves the acquisition of feedback from the public via a survey. Incorporating the opinions of Cork citizens will enable Cork City Council to better develop and refine the air quality strategy. Thus any new initiatives will be representative of the views and lived experiences of the citizens of Cork. With a high level of public support for air quality improvement initiatives, the likelihood of success is greatly increased. The overall aim of this theme is to inform the people of the dangers associated with air pollution and the actions that can be taken to reduce it. This will be achieved through regular updates to the City Council’s website on issues such as the linkages of air quality to health and well-being. Air quality information shall be delivered to schoolchildren and to college students through the development of short course material and the creation of information packs. The organisation of events around the city which have a focus on health, well-being and the environment will also help to ensure that the public are engaged with the issue.

Theme Summary » Acquire feedback via online survey from the public relating to their thoughts on air pollution and how to tackle it. » Inform Cork citizens about the health impacts of air pollution. » Develop public awareness campaigns to increase knowledge on air quality issues and encourage behavioural change around air pollution. » Develop connections with schools and colleges. » Develop a citywide Clean Air Day.
