Air quality objectives and action themes
Private Transport Cork City Council is aiming to reduce the volume of private vehicles on the city roads. This will be achieved by the phasing in of non-vehicular roads within the city centre and working towards assigning central roads within the city and Tivoli docklands solely for sustainable and active travel modes. For HGV deliveries, a last mile Electric Vehicle Delivery study shall be carried out. The council will also investigate the feasibility of implementing a permit system for HGV access to the city centre.
Cycling Infrastructure
Cork Bike Share Scheme Expanding non-motorised travel can have a significant effect on the levels of pollutants in the air. An increase in the availability of pedal bikes and electric bikes for hire will contribute to this movement away from the use of private vehicles. Increasing the size and accessibility of existing cycling routes and making a larger number of bicycle bays available will also play an important role in improving the cycling infrastructure throughout the city. Cyclist and Pedestrian Priority Zone at the Marina, Cork The Council also aims to increase support for Mobility Management Initiatives and other schemes which support greater use of walking, cycling and public transport; including Bike Week, European Mobility Week and other similar promotional events. Delivery of the ‘Cork City Cycling Strategy’ and the ‘Cork Cycle Network Plan’ will be instrumental to the success of this sub-theme.
