Elizabeth Fort
6 Guiding Principles and General Recommendations 6.1 The guiding principles set out below regarding the future of the Fort derive directly from the Statement of Significance. The first priority must be that the physical fabric is properly maintained through continuing programmes of inspection and repair. 6.2 Future developments should maintain the built elements, the relationships between them, and the relationship between the Fort interior and the surrounding urban context. 6.3 Consider establishing a hierarchy of values to be applied to future proposals • the fort should continue to dominate visually internally and externally • original material should not be compromised in any way • later additions/alterations to the original should be respected and assessed for the impact of any proposals. Generally, interventions a ff ecting the fabric should be avoided • the 20th century buildings within the complex are high quality buildings which are significant in themselves. External alterations should be avoided if possible. Internal alterations can be considered on merit as long as the character is maintained. • more recent works, such as the walkways and new paving, do not have the same degree of historical significance and appropriate change can be considered. The timber balustrades will have a short life and, on replacement, a visually less obtrusive and long- lasting material such as woven mesh might be considered • the axial approach through the main entrance is an important element and should be maintained • the hard landscaping and ground finishes must be maintained as simple, robust finishes in character with the character of the fort and should not be cluttered or softened 6.4 The visual dominance of the fort is a major element of significance. Developments in the surrounding Architectural Conservation Area must be assessed with this in mind. Views and prospects must be protected - that is, views of the fort and the prospects from it.
