Welcome to the 18th Cork Lifelong Learning Festival. Welcome all of you to the 2023 Cork Lifelong Learning Festival. I am honoured as Lord Mayor of Cork and Patron of the Festival to extend a hand of welcome to everyone who will participate in learning activities over festival week this year. As First Citizen of Cork I also want to acknowledge all those who work to make the festival happen, by hosting events and encouraging participants to attend, connecting people and inspiring them to discover the huge range of learning activities available year-round in our city. The festival has been central in creating a strong Learning City ‘eco-system’ in Cork, that has lead to

Is mór an onóir dom mar Ardmhéara Chorcaí agus mar Phátrún na Féile lámh fáilte a chur roimh gach duine a ghlacfaidh páirt i ngníomhaíochtaí foghlama le linn sheachtain na féile i mbliana. Mar Chéad Saoránach Chorcaí ba mhaith liom aitheantas a thabhairt dóibh siúd go léir a oibríonn chun an fhéile a chur i gcrích, trí imeachtaí a óstáil agus rannpháirtithe a spreagadh le freastal orthu, daoine a nascadh agus iad a spreagadh chun an réimse ollmhór gníomhaíochtaí foghlama atá ar fáil ó cheann ceann na bliana inár gcathair. Bhí an fhéile lárnach i gcruthú ‘éiceachóras’ láidir Chathair Foghlama i gCorcaigh, rud a d’fhág aitheantas idirnáisiúnta ó UNESCO. Bhí mar Corcaigh cheann de na chéad chathracha ar dhomhan ar bronnadh Gradam Chathair Foghlama UNESCO orthu in 2015, agus in 2017 roghnaigh UNESCO an chathair mar óstach don 3ú Comhdháil Idirnáisiúnta um Chathair Foghlama.

Aithnítear agus tá meas ar an bhféile ar fud an domhain thall agus spreag sí go leor cathracha eile chun a gceiliúradh féin a eagrú. Ach is iad ár muintir féin a dhéanann an fhéile. Daoine cosúil le Phil Goodman i mo cheantar féin de thosaigh an fhéile i 2004. Is féile í seo do gach duine – féile daoine, agus féile ar féidir linn ar fad a bheith bródúil as. lifelong learning. But it is our own people that make the festival what it is. People like Phil Goodman in my area of Douglas, whose group Young at Heart has been involved since
the festival started in 2004. This is a festival for everyone – a people’s festival, and one that we can all be proud of. Learning doesn’t stop when you leave school or college, it continues throughout our lives, and takes place

in all sorts of settings, and that’s what the festival programme shows you. There’s a huge range of events to choose from, including walks, exhibitions, classes, performances, and a lot more. Wherever you come from, whether you have lived in Cork all your life or arrived here recently, you are welcome to attend as many of the events as you wish – and they are all free. I want to encourage everyone in Cork to live up to the festival motto – and to ‘Investigate, Participate and Celebrate’- in other words, find out what learning opportunities are available, take part yourself,
