Health & Safety Award

Ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety legislation and best practice in the workplace has never been of such importance as it is has been since the onset of Covid 19. Ireland faces health challenges related to lifestyle trends, mental health issues, chronic disease, and health inequalities all which impact on the health of any workforce. At an international level it is well documented that workplaces are in a unique position to promote effective health, safety and wellbeing and many workplaces, including Cork City Council, have made significant progress in this area. To recognise these achievements Healthy Ireland have sponsored A Healthy Workplace Award which was commissioned in 2019 and is open to hundreds of entrants within the North and Republic of Ireland. Organisations must clearly demonstrate evidence of promoting a culture of health, safety and wellbeing while implementing health and safety related programmes and risk assessments across the organisation. Organisations are expected to demonstrate evidence of organisational commitment to workplace health, safety and wellbeing and evidence of policies, procedures analysis and continual reviews utilised to identify, assess, and manage workplace health, safety and wellbeing risks. Cork City Council’s Health & Safety Officer, Paula Kennedy, compiled a submission to the All-Ireland Healthy Workplace Award, with a crucial element of this submission being the work undertaken on Covid 19 Risk Assessments and the continual review of same. Winning such a prestigious award demonstrates our positive health and safety governance approach in continually reviewing and improving our health and safety management system.
