12.5 Case Study: Clogheenmilcon Fen Cork City is taking action to mitigate the effects of the climate and biodiversity crisis. Green spaces are important for biodiversity. They are also vital for our mental and physical health. In Blarney, the local community know the significance of Clogheenmilcon Fen. In 2021, Brand Blarney developed the Clogheenmilcon Fen Ecological and Tourism Plan. This plan was developed in cooperation with Cork City Council and funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development and Cork City Council. Funding came under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme.

The plan highlighted the value of Clogheenmilcon Fen: • For biodiversity •

The project stakeholders built bat houses, bird boxes and insect hotels. Cork City Council is also enhancing the wetland habitat by carrying out scrub clearance and creating additional areas of open water to enhance biodiversity in the area. A Landscape Plan for the site is currently being finalised. This will help with future educational opportunities.
