Spatial Planning: Refers to the methods used by the public sector to influence the distribution of people and activities in spaces of various scales. Spatial planning includes all levels of land use planning including urban planning, regional planning and national spatial plans. It is an interdisciplinary field that incorporates such sectors as:

Cultural

Social sciences,

Environmental issues

Community development, and

Economic development

These often include charity/not-for-profit organisations.

Stakeholder: a person such as an employee, customer, or citizen who is involved with an organisation, society, and so on. They have responsibilities towards it and an interest in its success. Strategic Environmental Assessment: A systematic decision support process, aiming to ensure that environmental and possibly other sustainability aspects are considered effectively in policy, plan and program making. Sustainable Development: Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Young Social Innovators: Young Social Innovators (YSI) is a non-profit organisation that empowers young people to use their talents, insights, passion and creativity to come up with innovative solutions to social challenges. UNIC Programme: UNIC stands for ‘European University of Post-Industrial Cities in Transition’. UNIC is an alliance of 10 European University and City partners who are pioneering innovative and transformative ways of working with and between their cities to tackle urban challenges and sustainable futures. Cork City Council and UCC are partners on the UNIC programme.

Socio-economic Analysis: A tool to evaluate what costs and benefits an action will create for society by comparing what will happen if this action is implemented as compared to the situation where the action is not implemented. Social Enterprise: An enterprise that trades for a social/societal purpose, where at least part of its income is earned from its trading activity, is separate from government, and where the surplus is primarily reinvested in the social objective. Social Inclusion: The process of improving the terms on which individuals and groups take part in society—improving the ability, opportunity, and dignity of those disadvantaged on the basis of their identity. Social Infrastructure: A subset of the infrastructure sector and typically includes assets that accommodate social services. Examples include schools, universities, hospitals, prisons and community housing. Social Prescribing Model: Social prescribing is done by a social prescriber or community health worker. It offers GPs and other health professionals a means of referring people to a range of non-clinical community supports which can have significant benefits for their overall health and wellbeing.
