Cork City’s Local Economic and Community Plan 2024 - 2029
Main Type of Employers As of 2021, there were a total of 39,573 enterprises in the County of Cork including the city. Most of these enterprises employed fewer than 10 people. These micro-businesses are therefore extremely important to the economy. However, larger enterprises employ more people. Some 84,138 people are employed by 70 larger enterprises. This means the numbers employed in 70 large companies is more than the combined figures of 61,147 employed in all the 36,602 microbusinesses and enterprises of 10-19 people. Many of these larger employers are located in Ringaskiddy just outside the city boundary. However, they have strong links in terms of supply chains and staff commuting from within the city boundary. In between large employers and micro-businesses are medium sized firms which employ between 20-49 employees. In total, medium firms employ 41,709 across Cork City and County. Links Between Different Sized Companies Links between the larger multinational companies and the large, medium, and small and micro businesses are vital. Improving these links can help spread the benefits of the high profitable multinational sector throughout the businesses that originated in Ireland. The larger companies can do this by doing business directly with the smaller ones. They also employ people with higher incomes that get spent in the region, benefitting local businesses.
