Cork City’s Local Economic and Community Plan 2024 - 2029
5.4 Climate Related Analysis

Findings of the Baseline Emissions Inventory Cork City Council commissioned a study to find out the level of greenhouse gas emissions in the city. Greenhouse gases are caused, for example, when we burn fossil fuels. They linger in the atmosphere and trap heat that would otherwise escape harmlessly into the stratosphere. They are the cause of global warming and some of them also cause serious health issues.

In Cork City, the main sources of our greenhouse gases come from:

burning fossil fuels in our homes and buildings (34% of emissions) transport – cars, buses and trucks (29% of emissions) commercial and industry sources – emissions from commercial and industrial buildings (22% of emissions).
To inform the ‘Cork City Climate Action Plan 2024–2029’ 30 , Cork City Council commissioned scientific research and carried out extensive consultation. This research gave us a baseline report on greenhouse gas emission in our city. The findings of this research and consultation have also informed the development of the LECP and will help Cork City Council to prioritise climate action across all of our plans. Please refer to Chapter 12 ‘A City Leading on Sustainability and Climate Action’ in this plan for more information.
