5.5 LECP SCOT Analysis (SCOT – Strengths, Constraints, Opportunities and Threats)

The following is a SCOT analysis. The items under each of the four entries are in no particular order.

STRENGTHS

Collaboration

General

Strong community and voluntary sector

Growing city – Population is increasing and Cork City is the fastest growing city in Ireland.

Strong record of inter-agency working to help minorities and those experiencing exclusion and deprivation.

High quality of life

Diverse city – we benefit from the presence of strong multinational communities.

Education

Education provision – home to two major universities which cater to more than 38,000 students each year. Language – Cork City is the second largest fluent English-speaking city in the European Union.

Economy (business)

Strong economy – with employment opportunities across various sectors. Strong Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) record – voted 1st in Europe for our FDI strategy in 2024 as we have a strong record of attracting and retaining FDI and have a large number of micro-businesses. (A micro-business is a business with up to 10 employees). High levels of current investment in transport, regeneration and housing. Excellent business networks and organisations which support new business ventures and inward investing companies.

Connectivity

International airport serving major European locations. Significant blue (water) and green assets including scenic waterfront and connected to large deep harbour and port.

Progressive and Innovative

Several International designations such as- UNESCO learning City, WHO Healthy City, WHO Age Friendly City, a Rainbow City and a Smart City. Strong innovation ecosystem and recently recognised as an EU Rising Innovative City.
