11.1 Introduction
Cork City Council will work to keep our city:
•
Safe
• Accessible in terms of our information, services, amenities and facilities • Resilient where communities use available resources to respond to, withstand, and recover from adverse situations
We will use a placemaking approach which aims to engage a broad array of stakeholders in the development of a place or facility. Cork City Council’s understanding of placemaking is a process whereby public spaces can be transformed, by a process of co-design and collaboration, into places which are welcoming, aesthetically pleasing, safe, accessible and resilient. Using this method, we want to work with community members and interest groups, other relevant agencies, as well as colleagues from across the council itself to realise the best outcome for the local community and the city as a whole. This placemaking process centres on creating public places together (co-designing) which improve urban vitality and people’s health, wellbeing and sense of belonging in Cork City. Placemaking works well with the Council’s community development approach, as well as emphasising the unique and essential understanding and expertise that communities have of their own needs, places and spaces. Prioritising safe, accessible, and resilient neighbourhoods has clear economic benefits, attracting residents and businesses to find their home in Cork City.
