ACA Herbert Park
Statement of Character
Description of Area
1.194 The original early 20th century pairs of houses, thought to be by the noted Cork architect Arthur Hill, are designed in an arts and crafts style characteristic of the Edwardian period. The group retain to a remarkable degree their original architectural features and are a superb example of middle-class housing of their time and place. 1.195 Though the street was originally laid out with building on the north side, a number of houses by the architect Henry Houghton Hill were constructed on the southern side, carefully conceived to not compete with or take from the setting of the larger houses opposite because of their lower level and linear architectural expression.
1.193 Herbert Park is a short cul-de-sac located on the east side of Gardiner’s Hill. The street was laid out in the early 20th C with three pairs of large semi- detached houses on the north side of the street facing south. In the early 1930s a number of houses were built on the south side of the street. They were designed by the architect Henry Houghton Hill in a modest but sophisticated modern architectural style distinct to the original houses opposite them but sit comfortably without detracting from the original setting.
