Description of Area

1.212 The area is of architectural and historical

1.211 The Myrtle Hill Terrace Architectural Conservation Area is located to the north of, and overlooking, the River Lee, and directly opposite Marina Park, and to the South of a private laneway to Myrtle Hill House. The site is bounded by private road, a public road (Lower Glanmire Road) and the railway line. The houses have developed in an East to West fashion, with the older houses located in Eastern section of the terrace, on land to the south of the Myrtle Hill private entrance which still contains a set of limestone pillars and some partially surviving cast iron railings. The houses have been cut off from the public road with the development of the railway and are now accessed over a level crossing.

Myrtle Hill Terrace is served by a single road which contains two and half and three storey terraced house which are typically single occupancy or sub divided units. These are typically set behind a wall and iron railings. However, some of the original walls, gates and railings have been removed to create space for cars or have been replaced with modern equivalents. Opposite the houses is a stone boundary wall that prevents access to the railway line. All of the houses are designed to face south, and access is from the road side of the house. The terrace has been designed to look out over the river, taking advantage of the views.
