ACA Oliver Plunkett Street

Statement of Character

Description of Area

1.216 In addition to its architectural significance, street is home to the site of Cork’s New Town, laid out in 1715. The Street, originally named after King George, reflects a new form of street design, uniform and straight, with smaller side streets running in a north-south direction. The street has a similar design to the one seen in Edinburgh’s New Town. The centre of the street, around the area of the General Post Office, has rounded corners which create a central space adding to the street’s civic importance.

1.215 This area is centred along the east-west axis of Oliver Plunkett Street. It is bounded on the east by Parnell Place and Grand Parade on the west. The Street is also bound by St. Patrick’s Street/Maylor Street to the north, and South Mall to the south.
