1.217 Oliver Plunkett Street was a street dedicated to trade and still serves this purpose today. It is still at the heart of the city’s commercial sector over 200 years after the street was originally laid out in the New Town format.
1.219 There are a number of large-scale buildings located along the street and these provide a leisure and shopping facility, as well providing services. The street also contains a number of institutional buildings; some notable examples are the Unitarian church, which is still in use today, the GPO, Keane’s Jewellers, Winthrop Arcade and Minahan’s Chemist/ Hi-B.
Building Typology
Issues
1.218 The street mainly contains buildings with 2-3 bays, however there are some exceptions, such as Keane’s Jewellers, while the building height tends to be between 3 and 5 stories. The ground floor uses for the street tend toward commercial uses, with office and residential spaces on the upper floors. The external elevations are generally painted plaster, and the buildings contains some notable features, such as sliding timber sash windows, various forms of window and door architraves, some cornices, and door cases with fanlights.
1.220 The street does suffer from some issues such as empty or underutilised upper floors. Unused office space and storage have taken over from what was once a residential use. There are some abandoned buildings along the street as well as some derelict sites/poor state of repair also. The fact that the street is in an inner-city location means there is demand for large floor space and for buildings to be combined to increase floor space sizes.
