Volume 3 Specific Built Heritage Objectives

2.232 It is accepted that significant change will occur. Modern Development is part of the evolving character of the city and is welcomed within ACAs provided that the proposed designs are cognisant of and has regard for the relationship between the river and the building stock, forms, patterns, and heritage associated with it. Current and future plans for the riverbanks of the proposed ACA, have and will take account of the extant historic features. The Morrisons Island Public Realm and Flood Protection Project will have no detrimental impact on the ACA and will in fact adhere to and compliment the ACA objectives. 2.233 Natural decay of the fender network is a significant issue with surveys reporting the condition of the 244 fenders on this section of the river as poor to very poor or collapsed in places. Options to conserve, control decay or replace sections of the structures are being considered by the Conservation unit of Cork City Council. 2.234 Traffic on the quays detracts from the feel and use of the river channel, particularly along Morrison’s Island through noise and car parking obstruction.

Social and Cultural

2.230 The area enclosed in the pACA is of core cultural and social significance to the identity of Cork City. The quays have been the site of import and export of fruits of Corks industrial and agricultural labours, such as the world-renowned butter and provisions trade. Life along the quays is part of the everyday experience of the residents of the city today as it was in the past centuries. Historic quayside infrastructure such as the fenders, steps, slipways, and railings are a direct link to the Quays and the river channel in its former shipping existence. While somewhat under-utilised at present, these existing features have the potential to be reinstated as key aspects to river usage in Cork City’s future.

Issues

2.231 The The river is both an urban and natural landscape and is therefore subject to many agents of change such as weather, climate change, pollution, development, and neglect. Changes in use of the river have in some areas resulted in poor maintenance or abandoned areas.
