Volume 3 Specific Built Heritage Objectives

ACA University College Cork (UCC), College Road and Magazine Road

1.175 UCC opened in 1849 and incorporated the quadrangle and other early campus buildings such as the Crawford Observatory. However, the other early buildings have since been removed. Prominent dwellings, namely Áras Na Laoi and Brookfield House, which are under the ownership and occupancy of UCC were some of the first dwellings built for wealthy families in this area of Cork. The remains of the Cork County Gaol site are also integrated into the main grounds of UCC. UCC grounds contain many important trees. 1.176 The Honan Chapel was constructed much later than the initial buildings on the main campus (1915)

Description of Area

1.174 This ACA is centred on College Road which runs east west and is bound to the north by the south channel of the River Lee and to the south by Magazine Road. The area is institutional in nature, incorporating University College Cork’s main campus and ancillary buildings, and the Bon Secours hospital.
