Introduction
Water & Wastewater 9.2 The availability of a clean, plentiful supply of drinking water is of key importance to the health of the City’s residents. Adequate wastewater treatment is also fundamental in protecting water bodies and public health. Clean Water and Sanitation is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN’s Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development 1 . Since 2014 Irish Water has been responsible for the operation of public water and wastewater services nationally. This includes strategic planning, policy development, service provision, customer service and capital investment planning and delivery of water services.
9.1 The sustainable growth and management of the City’s development depends on the provision of good quality infrastructure, while protecting the environment from pollution. Issues such as an adequate supply of clean water, good air quality and sustainable waste management are of major importance to the City’s residents and play a key role in addressing the challenges of climate change. A strategic approach is required to plan for the orderly, future development of the city and this is set out in the Core Strategy section of this plan. This plan will support the provision of infrastructure in a manner that protects public health, is environmentally appropriate and addresses the challenges of climate change.
