WELCOME to the 21st Cork Lifelong Learning Festival I am honored as Lord Mayor of Cork and Patron of the Festival to extend a very warm welcome to you to the 2026 Cork Lifelong Learning Festival, our 21st Festival. I also want to congratulate everyone involved in the Festival’s milestone year, and all those who have contributed to the sustained success of ‘an Féile Foghlama’ since the earliest years. As First Citizen of Cork I also want to acknowledge and thank all of my fellow citizens who work to make the festival happen, by hosting events, encouraging participants to attend, by connecting with people and inspiring them to discover the huge range of learning activities available all year- round in our city. These efforts have created a strong network of Learning City partners in Cork. This has led to international recognition by UNESCO, who have presented Cork with a second Learning City Award in 2024, the only city in the world to have achieved this honour. We have a lot to celebrate as a leading international Learning City and the Lifelong Learning Festival is our flagship. It is a festival for everyone, a people’s festival, and it is one that we all can be proud of. It is recognised and admired the world over. It has inspired many other cities to take this approach and I want to extend a very warm welcome to representatives from these cities around Europe, North America and further afield who will join us during festival week this year.
Cllr Fergal Dennehy Árdmhéara Chorcaí Lord Mayor of Cork FESTIVAL PATRON
As a proud resident of Togher Learning Neighbourhood I am very much looking forward to attending and supporting this years events as Lord Mayor. Cork can be proud of the unique connection between the office of the Lord Mayor and all the schools of the city. It is a tradition that dates back over 100 years to Lord Mayor Terence McSwiney, and has remained a constant commitment ever since as our city has grown, and will continue to grow in the future. It is the people of Cork who make the festival what it is. I want to encourage all of you to live up to the festival motto – to ‘Investigate, Participate and Celebrate’ in one of most engaging weeks of the year in Cork!
Message from our Learning City Co-Chairs On behalf of all our Cork Learning City partners, welcome to the 2026 Lifelong Learning Festival. Since the very first festival it has been a celebration of all that is best about our city and the value that we place on education and lifelong learning. Our motto captures the essence of lifelong learning and we encourage
you to: Participate, Investigate and Celebrate learning in all its forms. We wish to extend our gratitude to our hard working voluntary festival committee and our festival co-ordinator, James Leonard, and to Catherine Sheahan for maintaining the excellent standard of the festival since its inception.
Fèile Foghlama Chorcaì
A chairde, Fáilte romhaibh go léir chuig Féile Foghlama 2026 I gCorcaigh. I am delighted to welcome you our 21st Lifelong Learning Festival in Cork. As we mark this milestone year we celebrate the Festival as a key event in the city’s learning calendar. It is a fantastic window into how Cork city celebrates and continues to develop a culture of lifelong learning that strives to ‘Leaves No-one Behind’. Cork Education and Training Board is proud to be a lead partner in the Festival since it’s pilot year in 2004, and is very proud that the festival has been recognised internationally as a model of best practice by UNESCO and by the OECD LEED Forum. With our partners in the Learning City - Cork City Council, MTU, UCC, NAPD, the HSE, and Cork Chamber - Cork ETB are committed to improving access to Lifelong Learning, and we see the Lifelong Learning Festival as one of the key strategies to achieve this. I want to thank the organising committee, under the guidance of Chairperson Willie McAuliffe, the Festival Co-ordinator James Leonard, the Learning City Team in Cork City Council, and all those voluntary, community, statutory and private sector partners who contribute to this ongoing success in so many ways.
Denis Leamy Príomhfheidhmeannach / Chief Executive Bord Oideachais agus Oiliúna Chorcaí / Cork Education & Training Board
Comhghairdeachas gach éinne.
We hope your involvement in this year’s festival, whether as an event host, or as a participant (or both) is inspiring, and enjoyable. Thank you for making Cork Lifelong Learning Festival a thriving expression of our personality and our values as a Learning City and a City of Welcomes and a true celebration of our lifelong learning culture!

CORK LIFELONG LEARNING FESTIVAL WED 22ND - WED 29TH APRIL
Fèile Foghlama Chorcaì
Let’s think about three examples: • Poorly insulated homes are the biggest source of greenhouse gases in Cork. Learning how our homes can be more comfortable and use less energy increases understanding and encourages people to take the first step. • Making small changes that benefit the climate can make an enormous impact on our city. Walking, cycling, or using public transport for more of our short journeys improves our physical and mental health too. City centres with fewer traffic jams leave more space for people, boosting business, and making city centres better places to live. • Wasted food is a major problem in Ireland and a big expense to households. Learning skills around using recipes, well thought out shopping lists, and cooking tips, make a big difference. They save money too The Lifelong Learning Festival gives you the opportunity to learn about all these things and more. It will also give you ideas about what you can join in with, or where you can find help to act. Climate change affects everyone, young or old, wherever you are from. We are all in this together. The festival will help to create the friendships and connections across the city that will make us all better able to act. Our elected representatives have set a vision for the future where Cork is transforming into a climate neutral and resilient city that is rapidly becoming more fair, healthier, more economically vibrant and a more sustainable place to live, work and do business. Learning together helps us achieve that vision. To find out more about the positive climate action the City Council is planning and some more opportunities you might be able to join in with, please visit https://www.corkcity.ie/en/climate-action/
We’re now facing an even greater challenge of responding to our changing climate. To thrive as a city into the future, we need to act now, think long term, and we need to make sure everyone is able to cope with and bounce back from disasters, like floods or extreme weather. It will take communities working together across our city to find creative solutions to our shared challenge. No one person or organisation has all the answers to climate change. Many people find the issue, and the language used to describe it, confusing. Without understanding climate change we’re less likely to act, so it’s important that we learn from each other. Inside this brochure, you will find events where you can learn how people are already tackling climate change, looking after our environment and making the city greener. The Lifelong Learning Festival gives us the chance to learn about the causes of climate change, and about some of the things we can do to address it. There’s a reason that Cork calls itself the ‘Real Capital’ – we’re ferociously proud and passionate about our city. And when faced with challenges, we stand together and take action. Nowhere is this seen more than in how our communities have risen to challenges over the last number of years.
