CORK LEARNING CITY
Our Learning Island - A Shared Island Programme of INLC Learning City and Region Exchanges 2022- 2026 ‘Our Learning Island’ is a programme that expresses a shared commitment to promoting Lifelong learning across the island of Ireland by all city members and MOU signatories. The proposal on behalf of the Network was developed by Cork with the support of all INCL members and with match funding provided by Derry-Strabane.
Following a Launch Event in Cork in 2022, Learning City delegations from Derry-Strabane, Belfast, Cork, Limerick, Dublin, Waterford and more recently the Midlands have travelled to exchange models of good practice in delivering Lifelong Learning during Seminars and Site Visits hosted by Cork, Belfast, Limerick, Dublin, Waterford, and Derry-Strabane in 2023-26. Each two/three day programme organised by host cities involves delegates drawn from a range of lifelong learning sectors across each participating city in a series of sessions to exchange practice, make contacts and develop links with peers who have an interest in future projects on a shared island basis. Principles and Guidelines for the exchanges that were agreed with all members included: • Exchanges will focus on well established groups with strong leadership • Venues and Programmes will be selected by host cities, building in 2 overnights to allow time to develop sustainable relationships • Respect will be ensured for different traditions on all our communications • Our Programme will focus on Social Inclusion – seeking to work across all communities • The opportunity to develop policy and advocacy strategies for the INLC • To connect the Learning Island programme with Strategic Leaders across the cities
An evaluation of the Learning Island Exchanges was hosted by Cork during the Festival ahead of the conclusion of the previous Programme in June 2024 and the feedback informed a submission for a new Learning Island exchange plan under the Shared Island Citizenship programme that commenced in 2025. .
