● Proceed with action on the flood protection project as a means of mitigating future risk from rising water levels in the south and north channels ● Advance the Event Centre project together with partners to provide a new offer for events, conferences and explore the feasibility of the development of an iconic museum concept, building on Cork’s education, science, innovation, and maritime heritage; consider the development of an appropriate premises for arts colleges to locate in in the city centre ● Maximise the opportunities arising at Grand parade in the short and medium-term and support projects adjacent to city centre (Docklands, Kent Station Interchange): implement masterplans and public realm improvements to maximise footfall in city centre ● Advance the development of the Movement Strategy (e.g. Anglesea Street, South Mall and adjacent streets), implement the CMATS plan and prepare for development of LRT; complete an audit of bus stops’ location and accessibility and review key pinch points in the city, roll out BusConnects and develop bus lanes and bus stops in vicinity of strategic arterial routes ● Explore further pedestrianisation of city centre streets having regard to the very successful pedestrianisation of streets undertaken in the city centre recently ● Expand streetscape improvements in key areas (e.g. building on success of MacCurtain St improvement scheme and the South Quays sustainable transport) and implement a wayfinding strategy for the city centre (including clear signposting to/from Kent Station) ● Improve pedestrian and cycle linkages down the quays to/from the Docklands to open up areas in advance of future development. Increase awareness of availability of bicycle parking facilities and trial provision of sheltered facilities in high footfall areas
• The city centre’s hard infrastructure (road, rail, bus, active transport, education institutions) has enabled the city to grow and to prosper, and provide base for living, work, and learning • A number of targeted and strategic initiative can prepare the city for challenges as well as future growth • Currently, there are already plans to implement a number of mobility-related strategies and to plan and complete a number of projects • Increasingly, active transport options will need to be made available, to meet growing demand amongst residents of the city centre
