Cork City Centre Strategy Final Report 2022

Improvement and development of the built urban environment

Key observations

KPMG perspective

The Colour Corridor

Requires Uplift

Develop tourism offer by creating corridor between South Parish and Shandon via North Main Street and South Main Street. Provide colourful building decorations, ‘alternative’ market, street art and potential street festival. • A ‘Colour Corridor’ for North and South Main Street has not been developed and the appearance of both streets is impacted by a number of vacant units. There does not appear to be a regular market held on the street. • Street art and building decoration has the potential to improve building frontages onto North and South Main Street. Leverage the Cork’s food and agri-business offer and support role of the English Market by developing a new food innovation hub in the city. To include an artisan food court to attract visitors and provide demonstrations, R&D and food production. • This has been reviewed by the City Council and no plans have been announced for a food innovation hub within Cork City. Previous feasibility exercised by CCC indicated significant challenges for such a development. • In January 2020 construction commenced on a Food Innovation Hub at TeagascFood Research Centre in Fermoy, Co. Cork . There is potential opportunity for a complimentary satellite food hub in the City Centre to highlight products link with the Food Innovation Hub in to provide a complimentary food hub/outlet in the City Centre.
