Local writer Tadgh Coakley engaged with the public online through the One City One Book programme. 2020 also saw the Cork City Libraries’ first ever Writer-in-residence appointed. The Cork 2020 commemoration series of events also continued despite restrictions. The programme included three virtual exhibitions; • No Longer Forgotten: Cork Women of the Revolution • Cork: A City Burned- A City Reborn • A library Burned - A Library Reborn A CD was recorded 1920, A City in Flames and two books were also published: The Forgotten Lord Mayor and Nine Survivors as well as a commemorative calendar of original photographs taken at the time.

Development enabled essential maintenance work to be carried out in The City Library. The roof was glazed and repaired, and the Lending Department was painted for the first time in over 30 years. An outstanding achievement, despite restrictions and lockdown was the reopening of a beautifully refurbished Douglas Library on December 18th 2020. The library had been closed due to the shopping centre fire since August 2019. The % Art commission for this library was also awarded to two local textile artists. In 2020 Cork City Council’ Libraries Strategic Plan 2020-2024 was published. The five year plan places learning, creativity, and inclusion at the heart of communities. The actions and goals of this plan will be realised by the resilient and agile staff that brought Cork City Libraries through the challenges of COVID-19 in 2020. The library service looks forward to welcoming our communities inside library doors once again.
