Cork City Marathon Started in 2007 and organised by Cork City Council, the Cork City Marathon is the largest participatory sporting event of its kind in the country. The marathon is designed to support the city’s economy, to encourage healthy lifestyles, to promote civic engagement, social inclusion, fundraising and volunteering, and to showcase the city to a local, national, and international audience. This marathon appeals to a diverse group of runners as it also offers a half-marathon option and a team-relay option. On Sunday of each June Bank Holiday weekend, over 7,500 runners, joggers, walkers and wheelchairs take part in the marathon, half marathon, team relay and youth challenge. The Cork City Marathon is renowned for its inclusivity and is still the only marathon in Ireland to offer concession fees for students and those in receipt of social benefits. For 2020, our target was to have over seventy runners from Direct Provision centres running as part of a thousand strong Sanctuary Runners group, however due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the 2020 Cork City Marathon was postponed in the interest of safety, with all entries either deferred to the next marathon or

refunded. In acknowledging the needs of regular runners, a virtual race was held in June 2020, which gave the participants a focus for their summer runs. We look forward to welcoming thousands of runners back onto the streets of Cork when it is safe to do so.

Sports Capital Grant Scheme 2020 Cork City Council, through its Sports Capital Grant Scheme, seeks to assist local voluntary sporting organisations and clubs in developing and enhancing sports and physical recreation activities throughout the City. The scheme also assists in the purchase of non-personal sports equipment. ¤271,100 was allocated to eighty clubs and organisations across the city in 2020.
