Cycling in Schools Students in Ursuline Secondary School,

Blue Vests Initiative Cork City Council in partnership with HSE Social Inclusion have distributed over 1,000 Social Distancing Blue Vests through Community Groups across the City. The vests are designed as a reminder to give the person wearing them two metres space when they are out and about. The vests have been welcomed with open arms by those who have been cocooning. Feedback received from people cocooning, as they came back out into communities when restrictions eased, indicated that they were very nervous and felt that people were not giving them enough space. The purpose of the vests is to indicate clearly that the person is asking others to keep their two-metre distance and will allow people with an underlying condition or who have been cocooning to get out and about, while reminding others to respect social distancing guidelines. Family members of people who are still cocooning will also find the vests very useful in terms of indicating to others that they need to keep their distance in order to decrease the risk of COVID-19. The idea came about through the COVID-19 Community Response Forum in Mahon, just one of the 16 community response groups set up by Cork City Council with the HSE and partners in response to the COVID-19 restrictions. The vests have proven to be extremely popular; so much so that another order is on its way as there is high demand across the city.

Blackrock, took part in a cycling programme to mark Cork Bike Week and European Week of Sport. Cork Community Bikes supplied bikes and helmets and led a coaching session where the students learned about road safety and bike maintenance before enjoying a cycle along the Old Railway Line.

Community Engagement

Keeping Well in your Community Campaign 2020 At the request of the Department of an Taoiseach The Community Section created the Keeping Well in Your Community section on the website where, for the first time, the citizens of Cork could access wellbeing information from across the city on the Cork City Council website. We built a wide range of health focused projects and initiatives that we promoted on the website and we also worked with our Cork City Council Communications team to amplify wellbeing projects in written press, such as the ‘On the Green’ and “The Hut Rooftop Garden”. The information on the website was kept up to date and pertinent to the changing needs of the community by linking directly with the various collaborative networks in the city such as Cork Healthy Cities, Healthy Ireland, Cork Learning City, The COVID-19 City wide forum and Department of Health.
