Western Road
Western Road is a heavily utilised road by various road users (pedestrians, cyclists, buses, and private vehicular) with a strategic location adjacent to University College Cork and the Bon Secours Hospital. Various sections of Western Road had been repaired by Cork City Council over the last 15 years. Due to increasing signs of wear in recent years, more substantial resurfacing and drainage works were deemed appropriate. Cork City Council, with funding from both Transport Infrastructure Ireland and the National Transport Authority undertook significant infrastructure improvements on Western Road in 2020 including: Resurfacing along the Western Road between Victoria Cross and the junction between Western Road and the Bandfield (Mardyke Walk turn); Footpath reconstruction works; Rehabilitation of road drainage; Rehabilitation of intersection located between Western Road and Donovan’s Road located adjacent to the Bandfield. The aim of the various measures is to provide a safe high-quality route with an increased level of service and increased safety for all road users. The works commenced in mid-2020 and were substantially complete in late 2020.
