Planning & Development

Phase 1 relates to the section of Greenway from the N40 near Mahon Point to the Marina Cork City Council, with funding from the National Transport Authority, will be providing major improvements to this section of the Greenway including:

• Widen the greenway from the existing 3m to 5m in width

• New and improved access points will be provided

• The Blackrock Road railway footbridge will be reinstated, utilising the existing historic abutments, access ramps and disused railway platforms • The existing bridges, historical structures and features along the route will be repaired and cleaned where necessary • Environmentally sensitive public lighting will be provided along the full extent of the greenway plus CCTV • Soft landscaping works will be undertaken including tree, shrub, and wildflower planting with native pollinator friendly species • Bee, bird, and bat boxes will be installed to improve the attractiveness of the greenway for native fauna The overall aim of the project is to provide a high quality, attractive transportation and recreational route while also creating and supporting an environmental living corridor

Applications

The Planning Development Management team fulfilled all its functions throughout 2020 and rose to the challenges faced by Covid-19 lockdowns. Two hundred and twenty four pre-planning consultations were carried out in 2020 by the Development Management team, it facilitated the provision of this service to the public by conducting meetings via Microsoft Teams. Six hundred and ninety-nine decisions were made in 2020. The number of applications received in 2020 in comparison to 2019 was only marginally reduced by 3%. There was a slight drop in applications submitted in the initial few weeks of the first lockdown, but normal levels resumed thereafter. The number of Section 5 applications received in 2020 increased by 9.38% in comparison to 2019. The number of applications completed in 2020 stayed relatively stable with a small year over year increase of 2% (58 applications in 2020 versus 57 in 2019).

Deanrock Junction Upgrade

An upgrade was carried out to Deanrock Junction in 2020. The Deanrock Housing Project involved the construction of 66 units immediately adjacent to the Deanrock Junction. As part of the project, funding was provided by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage for the junction upgrade. Description

Passage Railway Greenway Improvement Scheme Phase 1

Contracts were signed in late 2020 for Phase 1 of the Passage Railway Greenway Improvement Scheme with work due to begin in early 2021.
