Innovation
Innovations are evident throughout this report and through the Chambers Excellence in Local Government Awards.
During 19-23 October over 240 staff participants took part in Innovation Week organised by the Business Process Service Improvement Team in Corporate Affairs & International Relations. This allowed staff to demonstrate innovative practices throughout the council through 10 lunchtime presentations. It created an opportunity to share knowledge, skills and build new relationships across the council. Presentations were held on the following:
Smart City
Cyber security remains a priority across the organisation and the MetaCompliance tool was used to deliver notifications and training to CCC staff on cyber security. The ability to deliver online training will be further enhanced with the recent purchase of a new training delivery platform. The migration of over 1200 endpoints from an on-premises to a cloud- based Sophos anti-virus solution is underway. A security review was conducted in 2020 with a Cyber security expert and a number of follow up recommendations implemented. Wifi4EU: Installation completed under the first voucher granted by EU for Public Wi-Fi deployments. New Wi-Fi infrastructure has been installed in the Bishop Lucey Park & Grand Parade plaza as well as the Cork City Museum and Fitzgerald Park surrounds. A Firewall replacement enabled increased throughput, improved network optimisation, security patches and ongoing support; A Sophos Upgrade will allow better management for remote working devices and Backup Expansion & Disaster Recovery will allow for increased capacity and enabling offsite replication for Disaster Recovery. Covid-19 bought about a number of innovative ways of using existing tools and software to quickly introduce induction training and videos for all staff, online ‘back to work forms’, appointment tracking and a contact tracing system for visitors.
