Dept. of Education

Summary of Submission and Observation:

This submission outlines the anticipated schools demand in strategic locations across the city based on the proposed housing and population targets in the plan. Areas include Ballincollig, Docklands, Blarney, Glanmire, Tower and city suburb areas. Existing school sites and any land buffers around them need to be protected in order to facilitate future need, and suitable lands should be made available in identified key growth areas, in line with the anticipated levels of population growth set out in the core strategy.

The submission also contains specific recommendations, including:

• School sites including buildings and green areas should be zoned for Education. All future school sites should be zoned and mapped. This includes the Douglas Rochestown Educate Together National School, St Gabriel’s Special School. • As referenced in the draft plan, a potential need is identified of up to 19 primary schools and up to 7 post-primary schools (either expansion or a new school). • Existing facilities or expansion are likely to be sufficient in the city centre, North-West suburbs, South-West suburbs, • New schools are likely to be required in docklands, Ballyvolane, South-East suburbs (near Castletreasure), Ballincollig, Blarney, Glanmire, • New school zoning should be provided on a suitable site for a new primary school in the Pouladuff / Lehenaghmore area. • Education Zoning at Farranferris is supported. • School site on Old Whitechurch Road should be zoned Education. • Objectives 10.59, 10.60, 10.61 and 10.62 (docklands) require amended wording. Minimum levels of car parking for schools in docklands should be defined. • Education Objective for Douglas (Castletreasure) is recommended. • Education Objective for Blarney is recommended. • Supports zoned Education lands in west Ballincollig.
