Freedom of the City

Summary of Submission and Observation:

This submission consists of a summary report based on over 2,000 students artwork and comments as part of the Freedom of the City Art Project from 28 Primary Schools, 2 Special Needs Schools and 9 Secondary Schools within Cork City. The summary report collates the majority of artwork and comments asking for numerous Development Plan changes young people would like to see on:

How to make Cork a better city, how Cork could be a healthier city,

• what would make Cork City a better place to learn and play, and • how Cork City could lead on climate action.

Ch.3 Delivering Homes and Communities

Housing - asking for more places to live

- -

repurposing old buildings to provide homes to address homelessness e.g. shelters

Education

- asking for bigger and new schools to be nearby,

- for more brighter, safer and accessible spaces for play, recreation and outdoor classrooms.

Health - asking for more hospital provision.

Libraries – asking for more libraries and museums

Community – asking for more community centres and youth clubs

Non development plan issues raised (which will not be addressed) include provision of food banks, security personnel in public parks, cafes where owners can bring dogs or cats, Ferris wheel and roller coaster

Ch. 4 Transport and Mobility

Young people asking for:

- fewer cars to make city a better place to live (traffic reduction and less petrol cars) - no cars in city - Public realm which incorporates fun and welcoming spaces. For example, there is potential to upgrade public realm within Grand Parade, Emmett Place and pedestrianised streets to incorporate playful and accessible infrastructure - increased capacity for cycling, bicycle lanes and safe places to cycle for everyone across the city - more pathways and greenways - more pedestrian crossings
