[OBJECTIVE 7.12] PRIME OFFICE LOCATIONS
Local actions across the city include: • Development of a digital twin of the South Docklands to support a new Positive Energy District (PED). • Cork City Council is implementing several smart r etrofitting projects across a portion of its 10,500 social housing units (see Objective 9.15 below in this report). • Air quality monitoring (see Objective 9.18 below in this report). [OBJECTIVE 7.10] NEW STRATEGIC EMPLOYMENT SITES The City Plan contains 6 new Strategic Employment Sites with a view to supporting social inclusion, attracting strategic investment and harnessing economic opportunities. To date, permission has been granted at Strategic Employment Site 5 at Hollyhill for a substantial extension to Apple’s European Headquarters. Construction has commenced on the 18,000 sqm facility at Hollyhill which will accommodate an additional 1,300 jobs. [OBJECTIVE 7.11] CORK SCIENCE AND INNOVATION PARK There has been no significant development on the Cork Science and Innovation Park. Cork City Council liaises with UCC in relation to the future development of the park. Lands are zoned to the west of the MTU campus for an expansion of the campus, including sports and other related facilities.
The City Centre and Docklands are the primary locations for higher order office developments. Since August 2022 there have been a number of high-profile office developments completed and occupied in City Docks including a 23,000 sqm development at Penrose Dock and a 28,000 sqm development at Horgan’s Quay. Since the Covid pandemic, the working environment has changed toward more flexible working and coworking spaces. The City Centre’s office offer continues to respond to these changing business needs with new developments at Albert Quay and Horgan’s Quay offering co-working space.
[OBJECTIVE 7.13] SUBURBAN GENERAL OFFICES
There are clusters of innovation in suburban locations across the city. A recent permission of note is for the construction of an office and hotel development at Jacob’s Island in Mahon.
[OBJECTIVE 7.14] TECHNOLOGY AND OFFICE-BASED INDUSTRY
Cork has a strong technology sector including Apple’s European Headquarters, Qualcomm and IBM, amongst others. To date, permission has been granted at Strategic Employment Site 5 at Hollyhill for a substantial extension to Apple’s European Headquarters. Construction has commenced on the 18,000 sqm facility which will accommodate an additional 1,300 jobs. Permission for the construction of a new research and innovation centre at The Rubicon Centre at Munster Technological University was recently approved. This adds to the established 3,000 sqm Business Incubator Centre.
