The City Development Plan contains a suite of objectives aimed at protecting and enhancing cultural and built heritage. The Cork City Council Heritage and Biodiversity Plan 2021-2026 is the primary vehicle under the City Development Plan for advancing actions to enhance, promote and protect our city’s cultural, built and natural heritage. Cork City Council manages several arts and cultural programmes with partners that have tourism benefits, including the St Patrick’s Festival, Culture Night and the GLOW festival in the City Centre.

[OBJECTIVE 8.1] STRATEGIC ARCHAEOLOGY OBJECTIVE

The City Archaeologist provides expert advice to a range of Cork City Council functions, including the development management planning functions in over 100 instances, and the strategic planning functions in advising on Framework Masterplans and other projects. Some of the major ongoing projects that the City Archaeologist advises on, occasionally as Project Archaeologist, include:

• The Beamish and Crawford Quarter bridges project • The Beamish and Crawford Quarter Bishop Lucy Park public realm project • The Morrison’s Island public realm and flood defences project • Cork City Dock Framework Masterplan • Marina Park (various phases)

In addition to the above the City Archaeologist advises on a range of projects being delivered by Cork City Council across the city in relation to the provision of infrastructure, recreation and amenity projects and housing. The City Archaeologist also carries out significant promotion and engagement activity with a wide range of stakeholders. The City Archaeologist administers the Community Grants Fund – in 2022 and 2023 the total fund amount was €260,000 and projects included works at Blarney Castle, St Fin Barre’s Cathedral, Elizabeth Fort and St Peters Church.
