[OBJECTIVE 8.18] REUSE & REFURBISHMENT OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS
Cork City Council supports the reuse and refurbishment of historic buildings with 3 different grant schemes, 2 of which are administered by Cork City Council with monies allocated by central government and 1 scheme administered by Cork City Council with monies allocated by Cork City Council for buildings within Architectural Conservation Areas. Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS) – a built heritage funding scheme run by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage in association with local authorities. The scheme assists owners of heritage structures, including those on the local authorities’ Record of Protected Structures and those in Architectural Conservation Areas, to meet their obligations to care for their properties by providing match-funded grants of up to €15,000 for standard projects (not involving thatch). The scheme is not limited to private dwellings, it also provides assistance to a wide range of other important heritage structures. Cork City Council received and administered €152,000 funding for the BHIS in 2022, 2023 and 2024 respectively. Historic Structures Fund (HSF) – a built heritage funding scheme run by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage in association with local authorities. Through grants of between €15,000 and €200,000, the HSF assists owners of heritage structures, including those on the local authorities’ Record of Protected Structures and those in Architectural Conservation Areas, to meet their obligations to care for their properties. Cork City Council received no HSF funding in 2022 but in 2023 it was awarded 3 HSF conservation grants totalling €270,000, and €344,000 HSF conservation grants in 2024 for 6 structures.
