[ Cork City Development Plan 2022-2028, Section 15(2) Two-Year Progress Report ]
SDG 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture
Targets under this goal relevant to the City Development Plan: Target 2.4
By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality.
This goal is contextualised in the City Development Plan through support for sustainable agricultural practices and community food growing opportunities and the protection and restoration of biodiversity and ecosystems. The City Development Plan safeguards the city’s rural hinterland, where agriculture is the primary land use, and supports the continuation of agricultural practices through rural housing policies that favour active participation in farming. Relevant to objectives relating to rural economic development, community food growing, tourism and city centre economy, Cork City Council has been successful in securing involvement in FEAST, a new EU-supported initiative for developing a local sustainable food system strategy, and the “Cork on a Fork Festival” has become established as a major event in Cork’s festival calendar, helping to strengthen Cork’s appeal to domestic and overseas visitors as a food destination. Objectives in the City Development Plan’s green and blue infrastructure strategy require a functional and resilient biodiversity network to inter alia maintain healthy food production, and support community food growing opportunities through allotments, community gardens and urban farms. SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages Targets under this goal relevant to the City Development Plan: Target 3.4 By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being. Target 3.6 By 2020, halve the number of global deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents. Target 3.8 Achieve universal health coverage, including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health-care services and access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all Target 3.9 By 2030, substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and contamination.
