Student and Youth Population Planning, commencement and delivery of Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) has increased in the city over the last 5 years. The number of PBSA currently at different stages of planning and delivery within the city is notable with 1,705 bedspaces granted in the last five year of which 1,050 bedspaces were completed, 167 were commenced and 488 were uncommenced as of July 2024.

The spatial distribution of Cork City’s population aged between 18-24 years shows a greater concentration (16- 48% of the total population) in the cluster of neighbourhoods around the city’s two university campuses, UCC and MTU. The centre of the city has a similar percentage share. Lower rates (6%-11% occur in Ballincollig, Douglas, Grange and other adjoining neighbourhoods in the Southeast suburbs.
