The location and scale of residential developments granted planning permissions since the City Development Plan was adopted generally matches the Core Strategy, with large-scale permissions granted in the strategic growth areas of the City Centre, City Docklands, Ballyvollane, Castletreasure, Mahon and Glanmire. There has been an increase in local authority social and affordable housing planning activity across the city. Central schemes include developments in the City Centre, Shandon and Blackpool with additional schemes planned for Ballincollig, Donnybrook, Ardarostig and Lehenaghmore. See more details of Social and Affordable Housing delivery in the ‘Strategic objective 2 delivering homes & communities’ Chapter 8 .

Monitoring Built Up Area/Greenfield Target

National Planning Objective 3(b) of the NPF requires at least half (50%) of all new homes targeted in Cork City and Ireland’s other four cities to be delivered within their existing built-up footprint. To enable this objective, the City Development Plan designates over half of all residentially zoned land as being within the existing built-up area. The Plan includes a map (City Development Plan Figure 2.22) and table (Table 2.5) to demonstrate which sites are within the built-up footprint (54%) or are greenfield sites (46%).
