CCC CDP 2022-2028 2 Year Progress Report

[ Cork City Development Plan 2022-2028, Section 15(2) Two-Year Progress Report ]

On 28th April 2022 Cork was selected as one of the EU Mission for climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. This is not referenced in the City Development Plan as the announcement was made too late in the plan-making process. Cork’s inclusion as a Mission City was leveraged to develop the city’s involvement in the 11 initiatives listed above and in developing other opportunities with accelerated climate action in mind. Cork’s involvement in the Mission reflects the City Development Plan’s emphasis on compact growth, sustainable travel, green and blue infrastructure, health and wellbeing and climate action. The Mission Cities designation was supplemented in November 2022 by Cork City Council becoming the first “Atlantic-Arctic city” to sign the EU Mission Ocean Charter “Restore our Ocean and Waters” which aims to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters through research and innovation, citizen engagement and blue investments. This was followed in January 2023 by Cork City Council subsequently being accepted as a signatory to the Charter of the Mission for Adaptation to Climate Change, which resonates with some of the City Development Plan’s other priorities, such as safeguarding biodiversity and promoting resilience.
