[ Cork City Development Plan 2022-2028, Section 15(2) Two-Year Progress Report ]

[OBJECTIVE 2.20] CENTRAL CITY AREA FRAMEWORK PLAN

[OBJECTIVE 2.22] DELIVERY OF RELEVANT STATE LAND

While this plan is due to be progressed in 2025, specific objectives are already underway: The Beamish and Crawford Quarter Infrastructure Project aims to improve the public realm and access in and around the Medieval Core of the City. This includes access to Bishop Lucey Park, Elisabeth Fort, St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral and the proposed new Event Centre on the site of the former Beamish & Crawford Brewery. The Project will see the provision of public realm improvements to South Main Street, Tobin Street, Tuckey Street, South Gate Bridge, Proby’s Quay, Frenches Quay, Crosses Green, Clarkes Bridge and Wandesford Quay. Two new pedestrian bridges linking Crosses’ Green to Lamley’s Lane and Frenches Quay to the site for the New Event Centre will be provided along with remedial repairs and vegetation removal from the quay walls along Frenches Quay, Proby’s Quay and Crosses Green will be provided. The BusConnects Cork plan and the preferred route selection processed for both the light rail transit (LRT) and Lee-to-Sea Greenway are progressing and include land use integration with key city centre areas and regeneration projects.

The Land Development Agency (LDA) published its first report on Relevant Public Lands in March 2023 10 : This statutory report is part of a strategic and on-going process to assess the potential of underutilised state-owned lands in Ireland and to support a pipeline of potential land for the provision of affordable housing into the future. The report identifies 83 parcels of land across 10 cities and regional towns in Ireland with the potential, according to the LDA, to deliver up to 67,000 new homes. 14 of these land parcels are identified in Cork City with an estimated capacity of 11,810 to 16,080 new homes.
