[ Cork City Development Plan 2022-2028, Section 15(2) Two-Year Progress Report ]
OBJECTIVE 3.22] TRAVELLER COMMUNITY FACILITIES
The Traveller Interagency Group (TIG) is a cross sectoral forum that addresses the needs, challenges and opportunities for the Traveller Community in Cork City, outside of the accommodation and housing sphere. This group benefits from input of representatives from across the public sector as well as representatives from Traveller advocacy groups. Subgroups of the TIG, including the Horse Project subgroup, meet at various intervals between TIG meetings. In the last year the Horse Project subgroup, which is comprised of members from Cork City Council, HSE, ISPCA and An Garda Síochána amongst others, oversaw an animal welfare day in Spring Lane Halting site. The group is now in the process of designing Equine education modules, and equine skills programmes for young people. This will be a collaboration between Cork City Council and Traveller Visibility group. The Horse Project Group is currently focused on programme-based support for Traveller horse owners in the city, as well as considering the use for these programmes of existing equestrian centres in and near the city.
[OBJECTIVE 3.24] SCHOOL FACILITIES
Cork City Council has been in close contact with the Department of Education in planning for the delivery of schools and has facilitated planning permission for extensions to primary schools and permission for a new post primary school in Douglas, near the Castletreasure Consolidation and Expansion Area. The preparation of the Docklands Framework Plan includes consultation with the Department of Education, facilitating co-location of schools and community hubs and the sharing of halls, playing fields and courts. The Development Plan includes 9 no. educational zonings in the new residential neighbourhoods of City Docks, Maglin / South Ballincollig, Ballyvolane, South Glanmire, Kilbarry / Blackpool and Douglas. The Framework Plans for Stoneview and Tivoli Docks make provision for educational sites, subject to the preparation of those plans. Cork City Council granted planning permission for the following educational developments:
• 3 permissions for extensions to primary school • 1 permission for a 600 pupil post primary school • 1 permission for a new business school • 1 permission for a change of use application for a 3rd level institution
