[OBJECTIVE 4.5] PERMEABILITY

A permeable street network is a key component of supporting more accessible, walkable and cycle friendly environments. However, the layout of many suburban residential developments across the city have tended to promote cul-de-sac layouts leading to circuitous routes to local services, schools and public transport stops. This Objective seeks to ensure permeability across new and established residential areas as well as to undertake a permeability study of Cork City and the urban towns during the lifetime of this Plan. A sample of projects where permeability enhancements have been included in projects either under construction or are being actively considered is presented in the table below.

Permeability Enhancements

The programme of infrastructure improvements works includes enhanced permeability along many of the corridors which will both enhance access to existing and new bus services but also to existing local services.

BusConnects Sustainable Transport Corridors

This multi-modal corridor will provide local level permeability to the planned growth areas to the south of Ballincollig.

Maglin Urban Expansion Area sustainable Access Corridor

This project included the delivery of enhanced accessibility between Grange Road and Shamrock Lawn with Tramore Valley Park. The proposed active travel measures in Mahon include improved permeability between Avenue de Rennes, Ringmahon Road and Loughmahon Community Park.

Grange to Tramore Valley Park Pedestrian and Cycleway

Mahon Cycle Routes

This project includes for enhanced access to Bishopstown Community College from both Leesdale and Westgate Road.

Bishopstown Community College

This residential scheme includes the provision of a new active travel connection between Glenheights Avenue and Spring Lane.

Ellis Yard (Spring Lane)

Enhanced permeability provided connecting Barnavara Avenue with Banduff Road.

Banduff Road

This scheme included provides direct active travel connectivity between Eagle Valley – Spur Hill – Togher Road – Forge Hill – Airport Road.

Cork City to Viaduct Greenway

This scheme provides greater connectivity between Donnybrook and the Mangala Greenway.

Calderwood Road Pedestrian Improvement Works

This project will improve permeability between Mahon Industrial Estate and the existing Passage Greenway.

Bessboro to Mahon Greenway

This multi-modal corridor will provide strategic level permeability between newly zoned lands and established residential districts to the north of Cork City.

Northern Distributor Road

In addition to the above infrastructure projects, additional permeability has been included within planned residential developments through the development management planning system.
