STRATEGIC OBJECTIVE 4: CLIMATE & ENVIRONMENT

MONITORED OBJECTIVES:

[OBJECTIVE 5.4]

Coordinated Regional Action on Climate Change

[OBJECTIVE 5.6]

Climate Change Projects

[OBJECTIVE 5.8]

Cork City Decarbonising Zone

[OBJECTIVE 5.19]

[OBJECTIVE 5.20]

Cork City District Energy Action Plan

Cork City Council is a leader in sustainable development and climate action. It is the only local authority in Ireland with a dedicated Climate Action Committee of Council where elected members set ambitious policies and objectives for the city, which are then implemented by a senior level Climate Action Team. While the primary vehicle for addressing climate action at a city-scale in Cork City is the Cork City Climate Action Plan (CAP) 2024-2029, climate action is a cross-cutting theme across the City Development Plan and relevant to all 9 Strategic Objectives.

[OBJECTIVE 5.4] COORDINATED REGIONAL ACTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE

There is now a Celtic Hydrogen Cluster of six Cork-based organisations (including Port of Cork, ESB, GNI, Irving Oil, Bord Gáis Energy and Simply Blue Group) which aims to deploy green hydrogen infrastructure in the Cork Region. This is an important element that supports increased renewable electricity penetration.

[OBJECTIVE 5.6] CLIMATE CHANGE PROJECTS

Overarching Cork City Council’s climate-change work is the Climate-neutral & Smart Cities Mission, which established the city’s aim to be net-zero by 2030 through a citywide coalition of organisations. The Mission’s programme emphasises access to opportunities to leverage various forms of innovative solutions in governance, social inclusion, stakeholder and community engagement, financing, technology and nature-based solutions.
