CCC CDP 2022-2028 2 Year Progress Report

[ Cork City Development Plan 2022-2028, Section 15(2) Two-Year Progress Report ]

[OBJECTIVE 6.20] ACTIVE RECREATION INFRASTRUCTURE

Cork City Council undertook a comprehensive review of active recreation infrastructure (ARI) in the city as part of the City Development Plan process. This established a clear baseline of existing facilities and identified future needs to meet the growing population over the Plan period to 2028, and beyond to 2040. Accordingly, land has been zoned for sports grounds and facilities to protect and expand strategic active recreation infrastructure in the city. The ongoing and future Framework Masterplans prepared under the City Development Plan will be informed by the ARI study. In the Cork Docklands Framework Masterplan process a number of options have been tested to maximise the strategic need for pitches within lands zoned for sports grounds along with the need to provide a dedicated multi-functional sports building. The space has been designed to accommodate a range of different sports in order to make sport and leisure accessible and attractive to the widest range of groups, including adjacent planned school campuses.

“Blueways” will be an area of focus in the new Fáilte Ireland Destination Experience Development Plan for Cork City, Harbour and East Cork – Fáilte Ireland are currently working on a tourism plan for the wider Harbour with working groups including representation from Cork City Council.

A lido is currently being considered in the context of a project Cork City Council is undertaking in conjunction with Swim Ireland, who are undertaking a national project to determine the demand for swimming pools in Ireland. A baseline model is currently being developed for the city to identify the current demand and supply deficit and Cork City Council intends to be a pilot city on a more detailed model for the city to determine the demand for swimming facilities based on the projected populations up to 2040. Planning applications permitted for active recreation facilities across the city are reflected on the map and in the table below.
