Shandon Integrated Urban Strategy Oct 2024

Into the 19 th- century and the First Edition or 1:10,560 Ordnance Survey map depicts the Shandon area as an established suburb on the northside of the city. By this point urban development had extended beyond the boundary of the IUS project area, with notable development to the east in the McCurtain Street (King Street at that time) and Wellington Road areas. All the marshland which bordered the Kiln River had been reclaimed at this point and the river had been regularised within a channel. A dense area of labourer cottage-style housing had also developed to the northwest of the project area and extended northwards beyond the present-day Cathedral Road area. This area was cleared and redeveloped during Cork Corporation’s social housing improvement schemes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. The map depicts the North Infirmary in-situ and operating, however, the Firkin Crane building has yet to be constructed. There is no indication of any surviving elements of Shandon Castle depicted on this map edition.
