Concept Design Plan
Heritage Wayfinding and Enhanced Gateways: Explore ways to highlight the historic streets and laneways by introducing heritage wayfinding features and installing new, distinctive gates to currently closed-off laneways. Decluttering: Enhance the pedestrian experience along Shandon Street by removing unnecessary or neglected signage poles, bollards, and other street clutter. Business Support: Hold regular ‘one-stop shop’ sessions for local businesses to learn more about grants and funding support available through the Council and other organisations. Opportunity also to explore the appetite for establishing a group that can represent Shandon Street businesses or a Business Improvement District (BID) that could lead one or more projects, services or works along the street.
Greening the Street: In line with Cork City Council’s Tree Strategy new street trees will be planted along the street, these will help frame parking, enhance street amenity and increase the permeable surfacing along the street, supporting Cork City Green and Blue Infrastructure (GBI) Strategy 2022-2028. Provide retailers with a number of hanging baskets / shop front planters to help improve the general attractiveness Encourage Outdoor Seating: Seek opportunities to provide space for commercial seating and incentivise local businesses to generate more activity along the street through simplified planning /regulation incentives for example. of the Street, liaise with the local florists (Shandon Flowers) to provide future plants.
Street Banners: Explore opportunity to add banners to streetlight polls and polls supporting utilities along the street, helping to create a visually vibrant street corridor celebrating the area’s heritage and multi-cultural character Improve Safety: Review the existing street lighting provision and CCTV coverage along the street to encourage its use in the evening and discourage anti-social behaviour. Review potential for more active presence of Community Drug Task Force along Shandon Street to deter drug taking activity in the area.
Cathedral Road
Framing / Defining Parking / Loading: Bookend stretches of parking with blocks of planting / rain garden, tree planting and / or boulder rocks establishing a greener and more attractive street, ensure drivers adhere to using parking / loading bays provided.
Northern Gateway Mural: Work closely with Walsh’s Pharmacy to potentially introduce a new gable mural to create a feature that marks a northern gateway onto Shandon Street
Blarney Street
Improving the resilience of Shandon Street Introduce stretches of rain gardens along the kerb edge with integrated bollards and use of natural materials to edge the features.

Inclusive and Social Shandon Street: Re-imagine Shandon Street as an inclusive and social space with a range of new outdoor seating, offering more rest spots to encourage people to dwell along the street and to help those walking up and down the hill.
Pope’s Quay
Consolidate / Relocate Loading Bays: Identify opportunities to reallocate loading bays for additional footway space either through their replacement along side streets (explore the suitability of new loading bays proposed along Cattle Market Street) or re-design of footway to subtly accommodate loading provision.
Cohesive and Visually Appealing Junction Spaces: Introduce historic surface materials at key junctions and crossing points along the street to enhance their historic character. Use natural materials to create a cohesive and visually appealing streetscape.
