Welcome to this guide for events taking place during National Heritage Week 2024! It is exciting to see the events taking place exploring the theme of Connections, Routes and Networks which takes a deeper look into many different things that connect us – roads, rivers, lineage, shared interests and much more. We’re grateful for the commitment of heritage and biodiversity officers in local authorities, as well as the passionate volunteers from communities across the country. Their dedication has brought together the events you’ll find in this guide, helping to keep our heritage alive and accessible for future generations. I want to acknowledge the work of local authority heritage and biodiversity officers but also the dedicated volunteers from a variety of communities working in heritage who have created the events listed in this guide. Their efforts ensure not only that our heritage is preserved, but that new generations can explore and learn about our heritage. Heritage Week in Cork City August 16th-24th, 2025
Heritage Week is back and Cork city is celebrating by organising a jam-packed fun filled programme of events!
National Heritage Week, an initiative by the Heritage Council, celebrates all things heritage and is coordinated in Cork city by the Cork City Council Heritage Officer. It brings together communities, families, organisations, cultural institutions, academics and enthusiasts, to build awareness about the value of heritage and support its conservation. Saturday August 16th
Cork Heritage Open Day Organised by Cork City Council, Cork Heritage Open Day sees over 30 historic and heritage buildings open their doors to the public for free for one day only. As part of Cork Heritage Open Day, a series of talks, exhibitions, historic walking tours and children’s events will take place. Cork City Libraries Lace workshop and a fashion show featuring traditional Irish lace A workshop for mixed lacemaking and a fashion show of unique pieces of traditional Irish lace including a traditional lace dress designed by the late Eileen O’Donoghue. YMCA Open Day at the Cork YMCA The YMCA will open their doors to the public, offering individual guided tours of the entire 3 floor building, sharing stories, and presenting both past and current work. They will showcase their impressive heritage collection, which includes approximately 20 books (from 1886 to the 1980s) documenting various YMCA departments – such as the Youth Gymnasium, Junior Department, and Reading Rooms. 11am to 4pm, Cork YMCA, 11 Malboro Street.

Cork LGBT Archive Cork LGBT Archive Open Day
The Cork LGBT Archive gathers, preserves and shares the rich history of the Cork’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. The Cork LGBT Archive will host an Open Day with Cork LGBT history exhibitions and archival materials on display. 2pm to 5pm, Unit 10, Crawford Business Park.

Cork City Libraries James Wilkinson Cork City Librarian 1892 to 1932 Book launch and talk with Mairéad Mooney. James Wilkinson was and still is, to date, the longest-serving librarian of Cork City’s public libraries. Appointed in October 1892, he held the

Dance Cork Firkin Crane Honouring Heritage, Shaping the Future:
The Story and Conservation of the Firkin Crane Explore the rich history and ongoing preservation of
one of Cork’s most unique and iconic buildings, located in the heart of Shandon. This conversation brings together Dr. Colin Rynne, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Archaeology at University College Cork and author of At the Sign of the Cow: Cork Butter Exchange, 1770–1924, and Chris Southgate, Conservation Engineer and Director of Southgate Associates. Together, they will reflect on the heritage significance of the Firkin Crane while discussing recent conservation works, including the roof repairs, and the vision guiding its future. A talk by Robert Devoy, Emeritus Professor of Geography at UCC. Learn about the River Lee from its source at Gougane Barra to its entry to the sea at Cork Harbour. 2pm, picnic area by Inniscarra Bridge, Inniscarra Road. Nature Network Ireland Guided walk of the Blarney River Trail with Pascal Sweeney The exploration of Blarney River Trail will be led by ecologist Pascal Sweeney who will delve into the fascinating aquatic and bankside river species and ecology. 2pm to 4pm, meeting at Waterloo Walk car park, Blarney River Trail.

The Traditional Lacemakers of Ireland 20 years Celebrations Step into a world of intricate beauty and heritage at the Irish Lace Exhibition , where each delicate stitch tells a story of craftsmanship, culture, and resilience. This carefully curated display showcases the timeless artistry of Irish lace-making – from the fine, floral Carrickmacross lace to the bold patterns of Clones lace and the ethereal webs of Limerick lace.

‘Mary Elmes: I got things done’ is a Cork City Libraries exhibition that documents the life of Mary Elmes, an Irish aid worker credited with saving the lives of at least 200 Jewish children at various times during the Holocaust, by hiding them in the back of her car. The exhibition will be on display in our Gallery throughout August and September.

‘Can you see what I see?’ An Art Exhibition supporting living well with Dementia. This Exhibition is written and illustrated by Caroline Hyland who is an illustrator and art facilitator, with a background in Occupational Therapy and Art Education. Caroline’s interest in Dementia is very personal. Her Granny and three of her granny’s sisters had Alzheimer’s disease. This project is a journey to find out more and then share her learning with others.

‘Hidden History - The Past and Future of All Saints Cemetery’ Hundreds of people pass All Saints Cemetery every day, but not everyone knows its poignant significance. Located at the top of Carr’s Hill, All Saints Cemetery is a famine and paupers’ graveyard, where thousands of poverty-stricken men, women, and children are buried with no headstone. This new exhibition from Douglas Tidy Towns, with support from Independent City Councillor and historian Kieran McCarthy, aims to keep the cemetery in the local community’s mind while Cork City Council works on its restoration plan.
