Castleview Terrace Stepcase
The old concrete steps at Castleview Terrace next to Water Street Bridge had been laid well over 80 years ago and this is the only means of access for 10 houses. The steps were becoming more strenuous to climb up and down for residents of these houses. Funding was secured for the step replacement, and work was due to commence in 2019. However, work was delayed due to site difficulties initially and then because of Covid but work finally started and was completed within 6 working days.
The work involved a combination of the construction of off-site formwork, the concrete moulds then being hauled up 8 metres vertical rise and placed in position, demolition of the old steps, steel reinforcing and concrete pumping from street level under Water Steet Bridge. Apart from a two hour window for casting, the residents were able to get in and out using a temporary wooden staircase.
