Cork City LGBTI+ InterAgency Group
Cork City marks May 17 th , the International Day Against Homophobia, Lesbophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia annually by organising an LGBTI+ Awareness Week to coincide with IDAHOBIT Cork’s LGBTI+ InterAgency Group has representation from all of the public agencies, LGBTI+ NGOs and community representatives. This week we come together to challenge homophobia, lesbophobia, transphobia and biphobia and to demonstrate the solidarityof the city with LGBTI+ communities, here and globally, in collaboration with the Rainbow Cities Network. Cork City has been privileged to participate in EU For Citizens Policy initiative as a Rainbow City and to host the participating cities in City Hall this January . We look forward to the publication of the Rainbow Cities LGBTIQ Good Practise Guide this IDAHOBIT and believe that it will help support cities and municipalities to become welcoming and inclusive spaces for LGBTIQ communities. In a world grown increasingly intolerant and threatening, the importance of marking IDAHOBIT is essential: this year’s theme speaks of the need for LGBTI+ communities and their allies to stand together, to stand strong, united in all of our glorious diversity. In 2023 we also mark the 30 th Anniversary of the Decriminalization of Homosexuality in Ireland; Victorian- era law which forced gay men to conduct their personal and private lives in secret for fear of legal sanction and which had a chilling effect on the entire LGBTI community. Decriminalisation was a major milestone in the history of LGBTI
Communities in Ireland and a significant step towards advancing human rights and inclusion for LGBT people. Now 30 years on, while undoubtedly much progress has been made , these rights are constantly questioned in political discourse, on social platforms and in mainstream media. 2022 was reported by ILGA as the most violent year for LGBTIQ people. In Ireland we have experienced that increase in violence and hate speech at the same time as efforts are underway to criminalise Hate Crime. At a time when hard-won advances for LGBTQ+ communities around the globe are increasingly under threat, the power of solidarity, allyship and community across identities, borders, and movements has never been more necessary.
