Rural Environmental Protection Scheme (REPS) Agri-Environmental Options Scheme

 Agri-environmental funding schemes aimed at rural development for the environmental enhancement and protection.  GLAS is the new replacement for REPS and AEOS which are both expiring. 

Establish best practice farming methods and production methods in order to protect landscapes and maximise conservation.  Protect biodiversity, endangered species of flora and fauna and wildlife habitats.  Ensure food is produced with the highest regard to the environment.  Implement nutrient management plans and grassland management plans.  Protect and maintain water bodies, wetlands and cultural heritage.

Rural

Development

The National Rural Development Programme, prepared by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, sets out a national programme based on the EU framework for rural development and prioritises improving the competitiveness of agriculture, improving the environment and improving the quality of life in rural areas

At a more detailed level, the programme also:  Supports structural change at farm level including training young farmers and encouraging early retirement, support for restructuring, development and innovation;  Aims to improve the environment, biodiversity and the amenity value of the countryside by support for land management through funds such as Natura 2000 payments etc.; and  Aims to improve quality of life in rural areas and encouraging diversification of economic activity through the implementation of local development strategies such as non-agricultural activities

Realising our Rural Potential: The Action Plan for Rural Development 2017

The Plan aims to unlock the potential of rural Ireland through a framework of supports at national and local level which will ensure that people who live in rural areas have increased opportunities for employment locally, and access to public services and social networks that support a high quality of life.

The Plan contains 276 actions across five key pillars. The five pillars are:  Supporting Sustainable Communities,  Supporting Enterprise and Employment,  Maximising our Rural Tourism and Recreation Potential,  Fostering Culture and Creativity in Rural Communities, and  Improving Rural Infrastructure and Connectivity.

River Basin Management Plan

 The River Basin Management Plan sets out the measures planned to maintain and improve the status of waters. 

Aim to protect and enhance all water bodies in the RBD and meet the environmental objectives outlined in Article 4 of the Water Framework Directive.  Identify and manages water bodies in the RBD.  Establish a programme of measures for monitoring and improving water quality in the RBD.  Involve the public through consultations.

National Peatlands Strategy (2015- 2025)

This Strategy aims to provide a long-term framework within which all of the peatlands within the State can be managed responsibly in order to optimise their social, environmental and economic contribution to the well-being of this and future generations.

Objectives of the Strategy: 

To give direction to Ireland’s approach to peatland management. To apply to all peatlands, including peat soils.  To ensure that the relevant State authorities and state-owned companies that influence such decisions contribute to meeting cross-cutting objectives and obligations in their policies and actions.  To ensure that Ireland’s peatlands are sustainably managed so that their benefits can be enjoyed responsible. 
