[7.5] Hedgerows Cork City Council will actively promote the creation and enhancement of native hedgerows using native hedgerow species. Hedgerow planting must be cognisant of appropriate placement and should also have regard for the potential to support and improve existing ecological connectivity. Suitable hedgerow placement should take all design considerations into account, including maintenance (maintenance responsibility, methodology, accessibility), infrastructural (e.g., immediate ground suitability and consideration for existing services), and road safety (sightlines and visibility). [7.6] Urban Trees for Food and Materials Production Cork City Council supports the principle of planting urban trees that can provide fruit, nuts, and materials (such as willow for weaving) in suitable locations. Historically, the city previously included orchards (as commemorated in various street names) and a significant osiery in Blackpool. Present day examples include walnut trees in St. Peter’s Park, Grattan Street and recently planted mini apple and pear orchards, including one at School Boy’s Walk, Glasheen.
INTERNAL POLICY 11: Cork City Council will plant and support the planting of trees that bear fruit, nuts, or supply handicraft materials in appropriate locations.
[7.7] In-Ground and Container Planting Wherever feasible, Cork City Council supports in-ground tree planting rather than container tree planting as a permanent solution. Trees in containers provide limited value, as their growth is limited by soil volume. To remain healthy, every few years container trees will either require root pruning or to be moved on and replaced by a smaller tree. Container trees can also require more watering.
In-ground tree pits also provide opportunities to incorporate Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUDs); a pilot project incorporating tree planting and SUDS into a public realm project will be an objective of this strategy.
ACTION 25. Develop a pilot project incorporating tree pits providing Sustainable Urban Drainage into the public realm.
