[8.3] Sponsored Tree Planting Cork City Council receives occasional requests to accommodate sponsorship of trees as memorials or to commemorate major life events. Due to potential sensitivities surrounding memorial tree plantings, any development of a scheme for sponsored memorial tree planting in public spaces would have to carefully consider the selection of suitable sites for health and safety and risks of vandalism/damage to the tree.
ACTION 26. Develop a protocol in respect of sponsored tree planting.
[8.4] Community and Other Voluntary Tree Planting Groups In recent years community and other voluntary tree planting groups have planted thousands of trees in Cork City and have even started small community tree nurseries. Cork City Council recognises the significant potential for expanding community planting in Cork City.
Voluntary groups have expressed interest in carrying out projects such as:
• Planting and establishing hedgerows, pocket forests, fruit and nut orchards, and native tree trails
• Starting (and expanding existing) community tree nurseries
• Conducting local tree audits, mapping significant trees, and engaging in citizen science
• Generating leaf mould and compost to provide healthy soil for tree planting
Groups have also identified needs, such as:
• A mechanism (potential forum) through which tree planting groups can liaise with Cork City Council and one another • A process through which Resident Associations can agree a tree planting strategy for open spaces in residential estates with Cork City Council
•
Assistance with ‘Right Tree, Right Place’ design
• Technical training in best practice planting and maintenance
•
Access to technical advice for queries on tree care
•
Additional funding
• Access to (public or private) land for community tree nurseries and tree planting
• Assistance with land agreements (e.g., leases and licences) for some circumstances
INTERNAL POLICY 15: Cork City Council will actively encourage and facilitate the involvement of community groups, schools, clubs, individuals, business owners, and other stakeholders in the promotion, planting, and care of trees in Cork City.
ACTION 27. Identify the key ways in which Cork City Council can further enable and support community-based tree initiatives and seek resources as necessary to implement.
ACTION 28. Explore opportunities to partner with companies and other entities for Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives involving tree planting.
